Shakira named Latin Grammy Person of 20011

Her hips don't lie and neither do her massive album sales.

International pop star Shakira was honoured as the 2011 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year in Las Vegas Wednesday night during a star-studded tribute dinner that saw the Colombian singer share an intimate moment with her father and close the night in a burst of song dedicated to her hometown of Barranquilla.

A parade of Latin music's biggest stars paid homage to the 34-year-old "Hips Don't Lie" singer during the concert at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip. They performed hits such as "La Tortura" and "Estoy Aqui" in a two-hour salute to a career that has spanned decades and continents.

Shakira gleefully took in the performances, occasionally bouncing in her chair to show her appreciation, or standing up to dance amid a maze of banquet tables. After each song, Shakira climbed on stage and embraced the performers that included Venezuelan singer Franco De Vita, Mexican rocker Alejandra Guzmán and salsa legend Gilberto Santa Rosa.

But it was a performance from her father, William Mebarak, that marked the emotional crescendo of the night. Mebarak, who sat next to Shakira for most of the show, took to the stage mid-way through the celebration and sang "Mi Nina Bonita" to his daughter. The song, which translates to "My Pretty Girl," is a staple father-daughter tribute often heard at Hispanic weddings and birthday parties.

Puerto Rican crooner Marc Anthony presented Shakira with a crystal plaque to mark the honour. He called her a close friend and a humanitarian. Shakira's Pies Descalzos Foundation has raised millions of dollars to fight poverty and educate the poor.

"We are in the presence of one of the most special human beings, one of the most talented human beings you will ever meet," Anthony said.

Shakira, who has sold more than 60 million albums in Spanish and English, is the youngest person to receive the Latin Recording Academy's most prestigious award. Previous honourees include Carlos Santana, Gloria Estefan and Ricky Martin.

"I'll carry this night with me always," she said in Spanish after receiving the award. "It's an honour that I am not sure I deserve, but you've made me very happy."

Shakira, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, was only 14 when she released her first album, "Magia". She rose to fame in Latin America and Spain in 1995 with the release "Pies Descalzos" and the 1998 release of her Spanish rock album "Donde Estan los Ladrones?"

She made her name in the English-language world with the hit single "Whenever, Wherever" in 2001, selling more than 13 million copies worldwide of the album "Laundry Service."

Jackson's doctor says unaware of singer's addictions

The doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter in Michael Jackson's death insists he was not the cause of the singer's death and denied that he was aware Jackson had an addiction problem when he began treating him.

In an interview with the "Today" shows Savannah Guthrie aired on Thursday but taped during the waning days of his trial, Dr. Conrad Murray characterized Jackson in his final hours as "a desperate man."

Asked whether he wished he had never met Jackson, Murray said he wished he had been more forthcoming about his medical history, instead of being deceptive.

"I love Michael too," Murray said. "Certainly he was deceptive by not sharing with me his whole medical history."

Murray denied having any knowledge or awareness that Jackson, who was seeing several doctors and on a variety of medications, might have had an addiction problem.

"Absolutely not, I did not have a clue," he said.

Murray said Jackson was already taking propofol, which Jackson was using to sleep and which led to his death, when he began treating him.

"This was not something I introduced to Michael," he said.

Murray contended he was actually trying to get Jackson off the drug, and "should have walked away," but added "if I walked away, I would have abandoned a friend."

When he was asked if he was the cause of Jackson's death he said, "No, I'm not."

Ash's security detail: Strict guidelines in place for hospital staff

Staff at the Seven Hills Hospital where Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will reportedly check in tomorrow, are working overtime to ensure her privacy and comfort.

Aishwarya is due to give birth any day after November 10. A suite on the fifth floor of the hospital, which also has a spa, has been completely refurbished for the Bachchan bahu.

Not just the medical staff, even security and housekeeping staff are burning the midnight oil to ensure that the medical facility is ready and safe for her delivery.

The hospital administration has reportedly doubled the shift for security personnel to 12-hours instead of the usual six-hour shift.

Once Aishwarya is admitted to the hospital, staff members will not be allowed to carry mobiles into her room.

"The authorities are afraid that a staffer will click a picture of the family that would hurt their reputation. Hence, they have imposed a ban on phones," said a source.

Aishwarya reportedly picked the Marol hospital because her sister-in-law Srima gave birth to her son at the same facility. "The hospital is not crowded allowing the star family to maintain a certain level of privacy," said a hospital doctor.

Yesterday MiD DAY saw Aishwarya and Abhishek entering the hospital's radiology department around 5 pm. While, Aishwarya looked comfortable in an anarkali with Abhishek by her side, the soon to-be dad wore a broad smile.

Tyra remembers her teen

Tyra Banks is more than a supermodel - she’s a full-fledged media mogul, whose brand includes TV's “America's Next Top Model,” fashion and beauty website TypeF.com, and now her first novel ‘Modelland’.

The refreshing thing about the 37-year-old former talk show host is that, unlike some celebrities, she’s quick to credit her education with all the success she has today. In fact, after putting college on hold right after high school to try runway modelling in Paris, this year Tyra stunned everyone by enrolling at Harvard Business School, where she’s scheduled to graduate in February.
The brainy beauty puts such an emphasis on education that she recently partnered with the non-profit organization Get Schooled, whose mission is to improve high school graduation rates, college readiness, and college completion rates.

She surprised more than 400 students at the High School for Teaching and Professions in the Bronx, New York, with a celebration for raising their attendance four percent in two weeks as part of the Get Schooled national attendance challenge.

Samuel L Jackson named highest-grossing actor of all time by Guinness

Samuel L. Jackson, who has grossed 7.42 billion dollars throughout his entire film career, has been declared as highest-grossing actor of all time by the Guinness Book of World Records.

The 62-year-old actor received his biggest break in the industry, starring in the 1991 Spike Lee film “Jungle Fever”.

Since then, the actor has appeared in over 100 films, from his critically acclaimed performance in “Pulp Fiction”, to landing a recurring role in the galactic space film series “Star Wars”.

Jackson, who's currently starring as Martin Luther King Jr. in the new Broadway production “The Mountaintop” alongside Angela Bassett, attributed his success and work ethic to his upbringing.

“I grew up in a working class family,” New York Daily News quoted him as telling CBS News.

“When I was a kid, all the adults in my house got up and went to work every day. I assumed that's what grown people do. That's what I do. I just happen to have a very interesting job that's kind of cool!” -- he added.

Priyanka's inspiration from Sarojini Naidu

Here is a role to 'dye' for.

In her upcoming film with Shahid Kapoor , Priyanka Chopra  will be wearing clothes that have been coloured with natural dyes only.

Designer Manish Malhotra  has been asked to avoid artificial colours for the actress's clothes that she'll wear in the 1910 part of the film -- the yet untitled project spans three eras -- the 1910s, 1960s and 2012.

Priyanka, who's known to pick slightly off-beat roles, be it 7 Khoon Maaf or the autistic character in the forthcoming Barfee, is all set to go back in time with this Kunal Kohli film. The actress plays a classy, sophisticated woman in different eras.

According to a source, the character will be modelled after Sarojini Naidu, but without her prominent political leanings.

When asked about Priyanka's look in the film, director Kunal Kohli said, "Politics isn't necessarily a party of every story set during the British Raj. Why are they always shown wearing colourless clothes in khadi threads? Why do we presume that the earlier 1900s was a drab period  for young people?"

During his research for the film, Kunal Kohli discovered that there were lots of vibrant natural colours in the clothes worn in that era and natural dyes were used extensively.

Kohli said, "During my research I discovered there was so much more to life in the British regime than swadesi khadi clothes. So many vibrant colours and a great fashion sense."

Priyanka apparently watched clippings of Sarojini Naidu to prepare for her character's body language and personality traits.

"Twilight" actor Kiowa Gordon arrested

"Twilight" actor Kiowa Gordon was on a road trip to L.A. for a big movie audition when he was arrested Monday morning -- and even though he missed the casting call ... sources say producers are willing to give him a second chance.
Kiowa's mom Camille -- nice lady -- said Kiowa and his buddy were driving from Arizona to Hollywood so her son could try out for a non-Twilight movie on Monday afternoon.
As  previously reported, Kiowa's ride was pulled over for a routine registration check in Tempe -- and when the cop noticed there was an outstanding warrant out for Kiowa's arrest stemming from an incident in 2010, he was taken into custody.
But Kiowa MAY get a second chance at the movie -- because Hollywood sources tell  producers agreed to reschedule the audition after learning about Gordon's situation.
Kiowa was bailed out of jail Wednesday morning -- and we're told he'll once again attempt to travel to L.A. some time this week -- this time for a "Twilight" photo shoot.

Trade Mark

Strong female characters.

His films frequently feature scenes filmed in deep blues, plots or events involving nuclear explosions or wars,
likes to make nice/effective cuts, likes to show close-up shots of feet or wheels, often trampling things, tight/close-up tracking shots on vehicles, especially during chase scenes, brings camera in close during fight scenes, achieving a claustrophobic effect.

Cameron's films tend to include broken, swinging fluorescent lights, especially in fight scenes. Like: The Abyss (1989), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), True Lies (1994), and Strange Days (1995).

Often includes sequences in which a video monitor is the perspective of the camera. For example, the T-800's viewpoint in infrared in The Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), the video log in Avatar (2009),the helmet cameras in Aliens (1986), Little Geek exploring the submarine in The Abyss (1989), television newscasts in The Abyss (1989), the surveillance cameras in True Lies (1994), the SQUID sequences in Strange Days (1995), and Brock's "Geraldo Moment" at the beginning of Titanic (1997). He uses this perspective at least once in every movie he is tied with.

Often features shots of large explosions, crashes, gunshots, etc. in the background with people running away in the foreground. These shots were used heavily in Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) and True Lies (1994) but also in other films.

[Dreams] Often works dreams or characters sleeping into the plot.

His films tend to have scenes with elevators with something dangerous happening near or in them. In Aliens (1986), Ripley goes up and down cargo elevator several times, exiting the complex and then going back while loading weapons to get Newt and then leaving with the Queen Alien following. The Queen Alien rides the elevator to follow Ripley. In Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Sara sees the T-800 for the first time exiting an elevator. The T-1000 is shot from outside the elevator and then attacks Sara, John and the T-800 above it. In another scene, Sara, John and the T-800 crash in an elevator after an explosion on a higher floor. They are then gassed by the SWAT team at the bottom. In True Lies (1994), Harry enters an elevator on a horse in pursuit of a terrorist in the opposite elevator on a motorcycle. In Titanic (1997), Rose goes up an elevator with Jack to escape her fiancé. In another scene, Rose goes down an elevator to a flooded floor, filling it with water.

Utilizes slow motion in intense scenes or to intensify a scene

Often employs composers Brad Fiedel and James Horner to score his films.

His films frequently depict children in some kind of danger.

Many of his films have water or the ocean as a central theme

The use of machines as an important plot point or weapon: in both Avatar and Aliens the soldiers use a similar machine to fight in the final battle, the Terminators are machines and The Abyss also features a lot of machines important to the plot.

Blockbusters often have one-word titles, which are also the subjects of them: "(The) Terminator", "(The) Abyss", "Titanic" etc.

In all his films, at least one character yells "Go! Go! Go!"

Personal Quotes
People call me a perfectionist, but I'm not. I'm a rightist. I do something until it's right, and then I move on to the next thing.

...you can read all the books about film-making, all the articles in American Cinematographer and that sort of thing, but you have to really see how it works on a day-to-day basis, and how to pace your energy so that you can survive the film, which was a lesson that took me a long time to learn.

I was petrified at the start of Terminator. First of all, I was working with a star, at least I thought of him as a star at the time. Arnold came out of it even more a star.

I went from driving a truck to becoming a movie director, with a little time working with Roger Corman in between. When I wrote The Terminator, I sold the rights at that time - that was my shot to get the film made. So I've never owned the rights in the time that the franchise has been developed. I was fortunate enough to get a chance to direct the second film and do so on my own creative terms, which was good. But that was in 1991 and I've felt like it was time to move on. The primary reason for making a third one was financial, and that didn't strike me as organic enough a reason to be making a film.

Salary

Avatar (2009)     $350,000,000
Titanic (1997)     $115,000,000 ($600k for screenplay + $8m salary + backend participation)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)     $6,000,000

I Made A Terrible Mistake' Says Heir to The British Throne - Prince William divorces Kate

LONDON—Barely a month after marrying 29-year-old Kate Middleton in a royal wedding ceremony watched by an estimated 2 billion people worldwide, Prince William announced Tuesday that he and Middleton have divorced and that the entire marriage was "a tremendous mistake in every possible regard." "I really don't know what I was thinking—we're a terrible match, I don't love her and never have, and, to be honest, I never really had any interest in being married in the first place," announced the now unattached Prince William to a dead-silent British press corps. "People thought our wedding was some sort of fairy tale, but I assure you it was all just some ghastly ceremonial farce that got out of hand. I'm just relieved it's over, frankly. And I'm glad I'll never have to see that awful woman again." Prince William then told the assembled reporters, "Well, see you all later," smiled, and walked back into Buckingham Palace.

A flash of thigh, a sensational week for Kate - Duchess of Cambridge.

With a swish and a thunderous sigh of relief, the red velvet curtain falls on the end of the first week of the first official royal tour for the Duchess of Cambridge.

And so far, so very, very good. Most excellent work, your royal Sister of Pippa-ness.

Really, things could not have gone better. During her nine days in Canada, the Duchess did not squash any toddlers under her impeccable nude platforms, suffer a wardrobe malfunction nor flash any unfortunate boob-age at the grateful Canadian nation.

Agreed, there were a few blowy moments in cricket whites and primrose silk when we saw envious yardage of royal thigh and the merest glimpse of knickerdom. Yet after a few desperate tugs on the hem of her pretty summer dresses, duchessorial blushes were spared.
No circle-of-shame snaps in a glossy magazine for HRH Kate this week, thank you very much. Elsewhere, international incidents, diplomatic skirmishes, awkward moments when she fled to the airport clutching her passport, trying to buy a one-way ticket to Monaco? All avoided.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have chosen their 'perfect home' as their London residence in the grounds of Kensington Palace

PRINCE William and his new bride have set up home in a little cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace. The pretty house, which is in a quiet spot in the palace complex, is said to be the “perfect home” for the newlyweds, who are keen to start a family.Reached through an archway, it has its own private garden and has been hand-picked by the couple as their new London residence.Crates of their possessions arrived at the cottage on Thursday, we can reveal. Boxes and suitcases were piled up on the lawn outside the house before being carried in by staff.Wills, who turns 29 on Tuesday, and Kate, 29, made a final decision on the cottage earlier this month after they were given a choice of properties in the grounds of the palace.
An insider said: “There was a lot of excitement on Thursday.
“This is them setting up home as a married couple.
“It’s an absolutely smashing little house. It’s so quiet there you’d never think you were in the middle of London.”
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will officially take up residence at the cottage when they arrive back from their 11-day tour of Canada and America next month. They will keep their small home in Anglesey, North Wales, where William is based as a search-and-rescue pilot. And they will also have an apartment in the main palace.Until now, the couple’s London base has been Clarence House in the bachelor flat William previously shared with younger brother Prince Harry, 26.The source added: “The cottage is the perfect house to start their new lives together until they have a family and need a bigger space.”William and Harry lived in apartment eight of Kensington Palace with their mum Diana until her death in 1997 and spent many happy hours playing in the gardens of the palace. The gated 17th Century palace sits next to the most expensive residential street in Britain, Kensington Palace Gardens in Hyde Park, where the average house price is £19.3million.Conveniently, the palace is also a stone’s throw away from the flat of Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton.A St James’s Palace spokesman confirmed the delivery of the couple’s possessions.
“They are in the process of moving in and they expect fully to move in after their return from Canada,” he added.

“Their home will remain Anglesey, but Kensington Palace will become their London residence.”

Bells pealed, crowds cheered, even the sun put in a timely appearance, as Prince William emerged from Westminster Abbey with his bride on his arm.Wearing a broad smile, a Wartski wedding ring of Welsh gold and an ivory gown with lace applique, Kate Middleton – now Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge – joined The Firm amid the pomp and pageantry Britain prides itself on performing well. Before a global television audience of many millions, Kate played her part to perfection. From the dress – by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen, kept a secret until the last moment and sending the British fashion industry into paroxyms of ecstasy – to the 1936 Cartier diamond tiara loaned by the Queen, she looked every inch the fairytale princess.Which, of course, she was not. The Queen's conferring of the ancient title of Duke of Cambridge on her grandson just hours before the ceremony deprived his wife of the title Princess Catherine. But she is a duchess, which is several rungs up the social ladder than her standing before entering the 1,000-year-old abbey this morning. And there was no mention of fairytale – unlike 30 years ago when Robert Runcie, then Archbishop of Canterbury, gushingly pronounced Prince Charles's union with Lady Diana Spencer "the stuff of fairytale". Lessons have since been learned.Instead, the Bishop of London, the Rt Rev Richard Chartres, read a prayer penned by William and Kate, and asking for spiritual help to guide them through their new life together. And this time, the bride did not forget her groom's name and the groom did not stumble over the wedding vows. Indeed, apart from some slight wrestling required get the tight ring on to Kate's finger, everything appeared to go without a hitch.William, in the bright red dress uniform of a colonel of the Irish Guards, whispered: "You look incredible, beautiful," as his bride arrived at his side in front of the High Altar. The two exchanged smiles and glances throughout the service. The couple, in the 1902 state landau, were borne to Buckingham Palace on a sea of union flags and a tide of well wishes. And the kiss on the palace balcony, duly demanded by the crowd below, was executed with poise and with a few blushes from an embarrassed William. It was a fleeting and quite chaste kiss. It was repeated as the crowd bayed for more, with William's seeming awkwardness reflecting his father's own self-consciousness when he had been required to perform "that caper" in front of millions.
It was the father of the modern British constitution, the 19th-century essayist Walter Bagehot, who once wrote "a royal family sweetens politics by the seasonable addition of nice and pretty events".Such was today's occasion, a moment of light to pierce the economic gloom. Kate, unblemished, beautiful and carrying a bridal bouquet that included sweet Williams in tribute to her prince, hid her nerves well. There surely were nerves as the couple made their vows in front of God, the so-called great and the good and a global TV audience of millions.About 44 foreign royals were seated close to 51 members of the Queen's extended family. The lesser royals had been bussed to the abbey in minibuses.
After the couple said their vows, in which she did not promise to obey William, the archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, declared: "I pronounce that they be man and wife together, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen."They spent a private moment together with their families as they signed the marriage register. The congregation included heads of state, diplomats, charity workers and the couple's friends. David Beckham, prominently displaying his OBE on the right lapel of his Ralph Lauren morning suit, was accompanied by his pregnant wife Victoria. Elton John, the singer, and Guy Ritchie, the film director, were among the celebrity faction.David Cameron, who slept on the Mall the night before Charles and Diana's wedding, wore morning dress while his wife, Samantha, chose to go hatless, unlike most of the female guests. The Middleton family guests were bussed in four silver mini-coaches from the Goring hotel, which the family had taken over for the pre-wedding night, thus bestowing on the hotel global publicity of inestimable value.
Other guests included Hash and Chan Shingadia, who run the convenience store in the Middletons' Berkshire village of Bucklebury, and obligingly added a love of Haribo sweets to Kate's many attributes.Villagers not in possession of a golden wedding ticket indulged in some celebratory duck and lamb racing on the green – and a spot of Morris dancing.Back at Buckingham Palace, 650 of the guests enjoyed a champagne and canape reception.Royal officials said William and Kate were involved in planning their wedding day, from the music at the ceremony to the flowers and the cake.Guests and observers agreed, it was a stylish marriage. Naturally it included a carriage. There was, though, a bicycle made for two at their disposal – a tandem given to the couple as a wedding present by the London mayor, Boris Johnson.
